a humorous novel (1932) by the English author Stella Gibbons (1902–89), about a lonely farm and the strange people who live there. It is a ↑parody (= a work that copies the style of another in order to be amusing) of the ‚earthy’ novels influenced by Hardy and Lawrence that were fashionable in the 1920s.
